A 10,000-Year Wonder

Step inside a beehive-shaped limestone dome and into 96-degree mineral water that has been welling up for twelve millennia.

The Crater is the only warm-water scuba diving destination in the continental United States, and one of the most singular natural features in the Wasatch. The dome formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich water rose from deep underground and cooled at the surface, building stone, layer by layer, until it sealed itself.

Inside, the water is glass-clear. Daylight enters through an oculus at the top of the dome and falls in a single shaft to the pool below — a quiet, almost sacred light that no photograph quite captures.
